The Experience

Foundation work

All of the courses in the program are designed to take students from diverse educational backgrounds and bring them to the same starting point to address the material.  We do make some foundation materials in Finance available to everyone prior to the core Finance courses in the program.

The Auburn residency

Over 24 months, the Auburn program combines seven short on-campus residencies with distance learning. This design lets you keep your work schedule and gives you the opportunity to connect with faculty, classmates, program alums, and visiting industry professionals. Here's a sample schedule (pdf).

The first week

We’ll handle all the details –registration, orientation, even books- so nothing interferes with your learning.  In this first residency, we’ll acquaint you with the academic policies that will frame your graduate studies.  We’ll have a day of team-building activities that introduce you to your classmates; we’ll focus intensively on the two courses you’ll take and introduce you to our distance materials and technology.  When you leave campus at the end of one short week, you’ll have everything you need to complete your coursework for the semester.

Distance learning

Easy-to-use distance technologies, convey most of the curriculum, and a syllabus and a set of deliverables keep you on track. We’ve designed the distance materials to be viewed in small segments so you can progress even if you have only a few minutes at a time. You'll be able to stream the lectures, or download them and watch them offline if you need to. Here's a playable example of one of our lectures:

Workload

Our graduates will tell you that the program design and the distance technologies allow you to fit the work into your own schedule.  You’ll have only two courses a semester and we’ve coordinated the assignments between the courses so due dates don’t conflict.  You can expect 15 hours per week for academic activities –lectures, readings, case studies, and assignments.  It’s a commitment.  But it’s a commitment to growth.

Field studies

There are four domestic and one international field study.  We take you to projects in various stages of development here, and abroad.  You’ll have the chance to speak directly with developers, architects, contractors, equity firms, regulatory officials, and get an on-site look at how some of the most interesting projects are created.

It’s unusual for an MRED program to have an international field study, but our experience has demonstrated that a direct interaction with international developers opens the door to new ideas, new ways of assembling the pieces of a deal.

Capstone

In your last semester, you’ll participate in a semester long project which will integrate all that you’ve learned.  This capstone is not a theoretical exercise, but an actual development under consideration.  With a team, you’ll respond to a Request for Proposal, craft the proposal over the course of the semester and –during the last residency— present your ideas to a panel of practicing development professionals and members of the actual development team.

Graduation

Your final residency includes your graduation.  We’ll order your cap and gown and invite your friends and family to a dinner and ceremony in honor of your achievement.

Ours

As a land-grant institution, Auburn is focused on providing practical, applicable knowledge that creates value.  That’s what we do.  What you learn today, you can use tomorrow.

The program is taught by faculty from the College of Architecture, Design and Construction and from the Harbert College of Business.  All have real world development skills and solid experience teaching adult learners. All are accomplished teachers who can create the intellectual challenges that will refine your skills and give you the tools to take control of your career. View our faculty directory here.

Our staff provides what one graduate called, “concierge service.”  We’ll register you for all of your courses, order your books and course materials, make your hotel reservations, coordinate your international trip, and order your cap and gown at graduation.  We’re here to let you focus on learning.
